Official Rules - Viral Video Competition
1. Description of Competition. The American Chemistry Council (the competition Sponsor) and Plus Media want to help educate the public about personal responsibility for litter in and around our water and beaches. This video competition is looking for fresh ideas to motivate people of all ages – at home, at play, and at work - to help keep our environment clean of litter. We would like to take your video and this message to as broad an audience as we can. Prizes will be awarded to those who submit the most creative and inspiring videos that capture the imagination, exploring both the problem and solutions in a fresh, evocative, thoughtful way.
2. How to Enter. Create an original video that is no longer than 2:30 minutes Total Running Time (TRT) in Data Format (e.g., mpeg, mpg avi, Quicktime, Windows Video/Media files). Narrative, dialogue, and text in your video must be in English or with English subtitles. You can enter as many times as you want – for as many videos as you have ideas – but make sure each entry meets all requirements. For each entry, you will need to send us a completed entry form and a video. You can submit your entry form and video submission online, or by U.S. mail or any other conventional mail delivery service.

If you enter by mail, your videotape or digital submission must be clearly and legibly labeled with your name and address. One video submission per cassette or CD/DVD. Regardless of how many times you enter, you can only win one prize; if more than one of your videos is selected for a prize, we will award you the highest level prize.
We must have received your completed video contest entry form by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on January 31st, 2008 for your entry to be considered. We must have received your completed video submission by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on January 31st, 2008. Entries and Video Submissions that are received after the times given, for any reason, will not be accepted. We will not accept responsibility for any entries that are incomplete, lost, damaged, illegible, forged, altered, or unviewable due to technical error(s).
All entries become the sole property of the Sponsor and will not be returned.
3. Eligibility. This contest is open to U.S. residents. You must be 18 years or older to enter. Employees of the PLUS Entertainment, the American Chemistry Council and their immediate families and/or those living in the same household of each are not eligible to win.
4. Selection of Winners and Prizes. Grand prize winners: Three (3) grand prize winners, and three additional winners (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th place), will be selected from all eligible entries by February, 2008 by the Viral Video Competition Judges. Judges’ decisions are final on all matters related to this contest. Winners will be notified by the phone number, email address, or mail address noted on their entry forms. Prizes will be awarded as follows:
1st through 6th place winners each receive scholarship cash prizes in the following amounts:
- 1st Place – $5,000
- 2nd Place - $3,000
- 3rd Place – $2,000
- 4th, 5th, & 6th Place winners will receive $250 toward documented production costs of a video.
All winners agree to share their production experiences with select news media as determined appropriate by the American Chemistry Council and may be offered the chance to participate in a national news satellite media tour to coincide with the announcement of the winners prior to the college spring break season in 2008 (January through March). Winners who agree to participate in a media tour will be awarded travel stipends in addition to prize winnings and may be required to sign a travel release.
5. General Rules. This competition is void where prohibited or restricted by law and subject to all applicable country, federal, state and local laws and regulations. This Competition will be governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The sponsor is not responsible for late, lost, stolen, damaged, garbled, incomplete, misaddressed, postage due, or misdirected entries, mail or communications, for errors, omissions, interruptions, deletions, defects, or delays in operations or transmission of information, in each case whether arising by way of technical or other failures or malfunctions or computer hardware, software, communications devices, or transmission lines or data corruption, theft, destruction, unauthorized access to or alteration of entry materials, loss or otherwise. The Sponsor is not responsible for electronic transmissions resulting in omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operations or transmission, active or passive filtering of any kind, or insufficient space in an entrant’s email account to receive email messages. The Sponsor disclaims any liability for damage to any computer system resulting from participation in, or accessing or downloading information in connection with, this Competition, and reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to modify, cancel, terminate or suspend this Competition should any virus, bug, technical failures, unauthorized human intervention or other causes beyond the Sponsor’s control corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness or proper conduct of the Competition. In the event of such cancellation, termination or suspension, a notice will be posted and the winner will be selected from among all eligible entries received prior to such time. The Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to disqualify any entrant from this Competition or any other promotion conducted now or in the future by the Sponsor or any of its affiliates if the entrant’s fraud or misconduct affects the integrity of the Competition. By participating in this Competition, the entrant accepts the conditions stated in these Official Rules, agrees to be bound by the decisions of the judges, and warrants that he or she is eligible to participate in this Competition.
6. Conditions of Participation. Sponsor reserves the right to substitute a prize for an item of equal or greater value in the event that all or part of a prize becomes unavailable. Prizes are awarded without warranty of any kind from Sponsor, express or implied, without limitation, except where this would be contrary to federal state, or local law or regulation. All federal, state, and local laws and regulations apply. Submission of entry into this Competition deems that entrants agree to be bound by the terms of these Official Rules and by the decisions of Sponsor, which are final and binding on all matters pertaining to this Competition. Return of any prize/prize notification may result in disqualification and selection of an alternate winner. Any potential winner who cannot be contacted within 7 days of first attempted notification will forfeit his/her prize and an alternate may be selected. Potential prize winners may be required to sign and return a Declaration of Eligibility/Liability & Publicity Release, and a W9 Taxpayer Identification Form, within 30 days following the date of first attempted notification. Failure to comply within this time period may result in disqualification and selection of an alternate winner. Any required taxes and any applicable withholding and reporting requirements are the sole responsibility of the winners.
By submitting an entry, the entry becomes the property of the Sponsor and each entrant assigns all rights in full the entry, the content of the entry and the ideas and concepts embodied therein to the Sponsor. Sponsor has the right to modify, use, assign, or dispose of such entries as it sees fit without approval of entrants or any third party. By accepting a prize, a winner grants permission to the Sponsor and its agencies to use the winner’s name, state and city of residence, image, likeness, photographs, voices and biographical materials, prize information, and video submissions for advertising, publicity, and promotion purposes in any medium without additional compensation to the extent permitted by law, including but not limited to posting the videos or screen names online for any purpose or on a winner’s list and other online announcements, and for sharing the videos with the media for viewing, whether television, internet, or print, without additional compensation. Neither entrants nor winners will receive any compensation or credit for use of entries, other than that disclosed in these rules. To the extent permitted by law, by accepting a prize, a winner agrees to hold harmless the contest Sponsor, its affiliates and agencies, respective directors, officers, employees and assigns, against any and all claims and liability arising out participation in this Contest and/or use or acceptance of any prize won. A winner assumes all liability for any injury or damage arising out of participation in this contest and/or use or acceptance of any prize.
7. Content of the Video Entry. The video entry must be the original creation of the entrant. The video must not have been, or during this competition be, submitted, distributed, aired or have won any other award in any other contest. If a submitted entry is determined to have been released to any other website or contest outside of the Viral Video Competition and Viral Video Contest Competition, all such entries will automatically become disqualified at the sole discretion of the contest organizers. The video entry cannot defame or invade the rights or privacy or any person, living or deceased, or otherwise infringe upon any third party’s personal or proprietary rights. Any video that includes likenesses of third parties or contains elements not owned by the entrant (such as, but not limited to, depictions of buildings, trademarks or logos) must be able to provide legal releases for such use, including Sponsor’s use of such entry, in a form satisfactory to the judges. All entrants are responsible for securing permission from all talent included in the video and will be asked to submit signed rights designation forms within a time frame requested by the contest organizers (Photo/Video Release forms can be Downloaded online at everypieceoflitter.com). Contestants participating in this contest are liable for any copyright infringements occasioned by their production or videos. Videos may not contain obscene or abusive language or content, including but not limited to: nudity, profanity or graphic physical violence.
8. Privacy. Entrants agree that personal data, especially name and address, may be processed, stored, and otherwise used for the purposes and within the context of the Competition and any other purposes outlined in these rules. The data may also be used by Sponsor to check an entrant’s identity, his or her postal address and telephone number, or to otherwise verify his or her eligibility to participate in the Contest and to receive any prize. Participants have a right to access, review, rectify, or cancel any personal data held by the Sponsor by writing to Sponsor at the address listed below. If an entrant’s data is cancelled, his or her entries will be ineligible in the Competition. Participants agree that any personal data or other information posted on any other website, such as but limited to YouTube.com, will become subject to the terms of the privacy policy posted on that website and Sponsor will have no liability or responsibility in connection therewith.
